Editor/writer/illustrator, Blessed Depth and Adventures in Nutritional Therapy,
Cleveland . . . 2011 – present
These are two non-commercial (ad-less) blogs I created and designed. Blessed Depth features three writers discussing their experiences with depression and is meant to be a source of support for people suffering from the pain, stigma and isolation of the condition.
Adventures in Nutritional Therapy focuses on the role of nutritional deficiencies in illness and disease and is aimed at people who have been frustrated by the limits of conventional medicine.
- Write and edit posts and assign topics to contributing writers.
- Create or commission illustrations.
- Maintain sites and customize design and functionality as needed.
- Work with local integrative medicine doctors, complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) practitioners, and health-food store staff to raise awareness of sites and build community of like-minded people.
- Monitor science, alternative health, and tech news and blogs to stay current on topics, generate ideas for posts, and keep abreast of trends in SEO, social media, analytics, etc.
- Cross-promote content on the usual social media platforms and networks, online writing and blogging communities, and social bookmarking sites.
Editor, Cleveland . . . 2010 – 2011
Edited, copyedited, and proofread memoirs, science-fiction and historical-fiction manuscripts, and poetry collections for self-published authors. Also worked for local businesses on business proposals and print and online marketing copy.
- Worked with compositors, graphic designers, and other editors to maintain uniformity in formatting and layout for print and e-reader versions of manuscripts.
- Researched subject matter, such as ancient Japanese history and physics, to confirm plot points.
- Instructed new authors on editor's role as well as reader expectations and industry standards for fact-checking, consistency, word usage, attributions, and punctuation.
Assistant Editor/Production, "The Daily Connection," Ernst & Young, Cleveland . . . 2008 – 2010
One of the Big Four accounting firms, Ernst & Young is also one of the largest professional services firms in the world.
- One of team of three people who wrote, edited, illustrated and produced daily email newsletter for 40,000 employees in North, Central and South America and Israel
- Wrote items and teasers for firm-sponsored podcasts and webcasts, personnel and policy changes, etc.
- Wrote and chose photos for most popular column featuring employees' photos
- Redesigned newsletter to accommodate technology changes
- Trained regional editors and streamlined production process for their editions
Website Content Manager, Ernst & Young, Cleveland . . . 1999 – 2008
- One of team of five people who processed all content destined for U.S. pages of ey.com, an external corporate website
- Website marketing duties included editing and writing copy for site’s business unit and marketing pages to promote events, publications, webcasts, legislation, projects, etc.
- Communications duties included:
- Writing and editing training materials for ey.com team members around the world, and for employee and client users of the firm's web-based tools
- Developing communication plans for training sessions on new tools
- Writing articles for firmwide intranet site on web-related issues
- Researching, evaluating and reporting on topics such as usability, new platforms, competitors' websites, etc.
- Developing, communicating and enforcing writing and design standards
- Worked with firm's business units to find content to promote on website. Guided content through editorial, approval, and website publishing processes.
- Trained team members on production processes; troubleshot technical problems; designed intranet websites; managed temporary contractors; advised on information architecture for new ey.com websites
- Website has won six annual WebAwards from the Web Marketing Association since 1999
Staff Editor, Books.com, Cleveland . . . 1998 – 1999
The very first online bookstore, founded by Clevelander Charles Stack, books.com was absorbed by Barnes and Noble in October 1999.
